Every home in India has two smells. The courtyard at dusk, when the diyas are lit and the earth gives back the heat of the day. And the house itself — chai on the stove, a grandmother's cotton sheets, jasmine somewhere close.
The Aangan jar is the courtyard. Vetiver, sandalwood and patchouli, with a trace of yesterday's rain still in the mud. It lingers for hours after the wick goes out.
The Ghar box is the house. Masala Chai is the cup simmered too long on purpose. Nani ka Ghar is warm milk, old wood and clean cotton. Gajra is jasmine worn in a braid on a festival evening.
For the person who won't make it home this Diwali. Or the parents who are the reason it feels like home at all.
